WEB DEVELOPER/INFORMATION DESIGNER - XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, Ajax, JSP - Cambridge, South East
We require a dynamic front-end web developer to join our small but growing team. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and improving CiteXplore and related websites.
We are planning to implement many new features to improve the search, site navigation, links with biological databases, and social/networking functions. If you have a passion for creating functional, uncluttered and attractive websites that use Web 2.0 design elements, then this is a great opportunity to enhance text searching for scientists.
Specific tasks will include:
- technical design and management of the CiteXplore websites
- implementing and testing new features (client side)
- evolving the behaviour of the website in response to user feedback
The position reports to the Team Leader for Literature Services.
The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) is expanding the scope of its Literature Resources to better serve the scientific community. The current literature resources at the EBI include: PubMed, Agricola, NHS National Library of Health records, and patent information, all of which can be retrieved via CiteXplore. As a partner in the UK PubMed Central project, we are also making search services for full text articles and enhancing the literature using text mining techniques.
The EBI is responsible for hosting core databases for biomedical research, including UniProt (proteins), Ensembl (genomes), PDBe (protein structures) and ArrayExpress (gene expression). The scientific literature is an essential part of these data collections, providing the functional description and biomedical context for the information.
The successful applicant will have the following qualifications and experience:
- university degree in Computer Science or related field; PhD a definite plus
- experience of biomedical research and/or scientific publishing;
- XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, Ajax, JSP, Struts skills;
- clear demonstration of previous work and/or strong portfolio
- have the ability to work in an international environment;
- excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be a team player;
- show some creative flair and ability to work independently;
- experience in biomedical research and/or in scientific publishing.
An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
