Overall Data Network Engineer (UNIX, Cisco, Network Engineer, Microsoft) role purpose
Network and local touch Infrastructure Support for the Scotland area.

Key accountabilities
• Provide support for network and server hardware related faults.
• On-site support for IT infrastructure devices eg UNIX, Wintel
• Progress physical server fault correction to agreed service levels, coordinating with and accompanying hardware 3rd line contractors (eg MVM engineer) during break/fix
activities.
• Assist remote support personnel with fault diagnostics, using local consoles (under
supervision if necessary) from offshore support or onshore IT SME teams.
• Manage and maintain Communications and Computer rooms within area supported.
• Install new network and infrastructure hardware and modification of any existing
network infrastructure
• Carry out hardware and operating system changes as requested by Infrastructure SME’s.
• Manage and allocate computer room floor and rack space resources (in consultation
with IT SME’s)
• Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of technology users

Technical competencies

Essential
• A minimum of 2 years experience in a support environment, ideally some of which
has been in a computer comms environment
• Be familiar with Cisco products
• Be familiar with Microsoft products
• Good knowledge of local area network architecture
• Good knowledge of infrastructure requirements and components of local areanetworks
• Considerable knowledge of local area networks protocols and diagnostic tools
• Working knowledge of UNIX and Windows operating systems eg Solaris, Windows2000, Windows 2003

Desirable

• Knowledge of SUN Enterprise, HP ProLiant hardware ranges
• Familiarity with products such as HP Open-view and Cisco Works
• Understand the issues involved in administering and maintaining corporate
infrastructure including network connectivity, wireless access etc
• Good knowledge of network operating systems

Qualifications
• IT and/or Telecoms experience of 5 yrs minimum, Server OS, Voice & Data (LLU,
Switches) and IT system interfaces
